Over the past eight years, I’ve had the opportunity to create University of Utah headshots for hundreds of professors, faculty members, and staff.

When photographing large groups like university faculty and staff, efficiency is key. With a streamlined process, I ensure that each subject receives personal attention within a brief 10-minute window. The use of tethered capture allows subjects to view their images in real time and make immediate selections, ensuring they leave with a headshot they’re happy with.

Additionally, tethering helps create a smoother workflow, which is especially beneficial for large-scale shoots like this one. This efficient approach ensures that the process remains both high-quality and fast, even with a large number of people to photograph.

Overcoming Location Challenges at the College

While the SJ Quinney College of Law’s building offers abundant natural light, especially from its expansive south-facing windows, this can present challenges when aiming for consistent, high-quality headshots. As natural light changes throughout the day, so does its impact on the final imaget.

To overcome this, I set up a controlled studio environment that uses a three-point lighting system, scrims, and negative fill. This allows me to neutralize any light fluctuations while still making use of the natural beauty of the space. My experience in working with natural light in various environments ensures that I can produce professional-grade headshots that stand out.
